The famous conjoined twins share the same body but still have completely different lives, personalities and jobs that surprise the world
Although they are always “attached” to each other, twins Abigail and Brittany Hensel have their own independent lives.
Abigail (often called Abby) and Brittany Hensel (born in 1990) are extremely famous conjoined twins living in Minnesota, USA. They have appeared on MC Ophrah Winfrey’s show, have their own reality show called Joined for life and most importantly, make everyone admire their determination and optimism in adversity.
When the two sisters were born, doctors and parents were extremely shocked to see a “two-headed girl”. Before that, their mother had an ultrasound during pregnancy and only saw the image of a normal baby girl. Unexpectedly, they were conjoined twins with 2 heads, 2 spines, 3 lungs, 2 hearts, 2 stomachs, 3 kidneys, but only 2 legs, 2 arms, 1 liver. Their bodies also shared the same circulatory system and genitals.
The two sisters each controlled one leg and one arm and shared many common body parts
Doctors quickly concluded that Abby and Brittany’s chances of survival were extremely slim. So the medical community was surprised to see that the pair of sisters were still alive and well. Up to now, when they are both 31 years old, Abby and Brittany are still in stable health, although of course they cannot be like normal people.
At first glance, Abby and Brittany look like a person with two heads
Because they have to “share” their legs and some other parts, the two sisters soon learned to accept their situation, smoothly synchronize their movements and coordinate their actions with each other. The two can coordinate their activities so perfectly that they easily learn to play the piano, swim, ride a bike and play sports.
Living in such special circumstances, Abby and Brittany are not dependent on each other and are “doubles” of each other as many people think. Each person can only control their own side of the body and they cannot feel the body of the other sister. They always proudly share that they are very independent, separate individuals with different personalities, interests, even completely opposite.
The two always affirm that they are two extremely independent girls
The faces of Abby (left) and Brittany are also not the same
While Abby is an introverted, quiet girl who likes to stay at home, Brittany is extroverted, likes to socialize and meet friends. Their learning abilities and interests are also different. Abby likes to study natural sciences, while her sister likes social sciences. The two said their eating preferences and many other interests in life are also different.
At school, from childhood to adulthood, the two sisters were fortunate to not encounter discrimination or ridicule. Every time they took a test, the teachers had to arrange a special exam proctor for the two girls to avoid cheating.
The two sisters can confidently drive and move freely like normal people
Not only did they develop independent psychology, the twins also developed differently physically. During their teenage years, Abigail grew faster than her sister, at times she was 10 cm taller than her sister, causing Brittany to walk on tiptoe.
The two sisters, Abigail and Brittany Hensel, overcame adversity and experienced a life not too different from normal people. They graduated from Bethel University with two degrees in education in 2012 and later became elementary school teachers. But the twins teach two completely different subjects: Abby teaches math and physics, Brittany teaches literature and history. Since only one can teach at a time, the sisters accept the salary of an employee.
When one teaches, the other takes a “break”
In recent years, instead of appearing in the media as much as before, the Hensel sisters have kept a more private lifestyle. In 2020, Brittany was also said to be engaged, although it has not been officially confirmed. This information makes people curious about what their lives will be like if one of the sisters dates and gets married.
In 2019, when answering an interview, the conjoined twins affirmed that they are also looking forward to and ready for their own dating and marriage. Brittany said: “We hope to be mothers in the future, although we have not yet figured out how we should do it.”
