We’re Raising Our Kids With No Gender | MY EXTRAORDINARY FAMILY
In a world where most children are assigned a gender at birth, Hazel and Sparrow’s family has chosen a radically different path: raising their kids without imposing gender. This decision has made them the center of controversy, drawing harsh criticism—and even death threats. But for them, the most important thing is their children’s freedom and happiness.
“We don’t know Sparrow’s gender yet. That’s something Sparrow will figure out and tell us.”
Hazel, the eldest child, has come out as non-binary—neither male nor female. Hazel shares:
“The pronouns ‘she’ and ‘he’ didn’t fit. Non-binary was what I turned to, even though I choose to act and look more feminine.”
Sparrow, only two and a half years old, has yet to make a choice about their gender. The family uses “they/them” pronouns for Sparrow, trusting that one day Sparrow will decide for themselves.
A Controversial Parenting Approach
This choice has sparked fierce backlash online:
“I’ve literally received death threats.”
“What you’re doing is horrifying. I feel for your kids.”
“I hope karma hits you back and your kids grow up to detest you.”
But these parents are firm in their belief that their children should decide who they are.
“Many people ask: ‘If you don’t teach your kids about gender, how will they know what a boy or girl is?’ But we do give them information about gender—we just don’t impose it.”
One common argument is: “Children are too young to know their gender, so they need to be told what it is.”
Hazel’s family responds:
“We agree that children don’t know yet. But our response to that fact is very different: We let them decide.”
A Different Kind of Education—Respecting Individuality
Their approach to education is also unique. Hazel is homeschooled and leads their own learning, with parents supporting as needed.
“Usually, we only spend an hour or two a day at the table doing typical academics. The rest of the time is natural, fun learning through play and exploration.”
The family doesn’t force homeschooling. If Hazel wants to return to public school after the pandemic, they will fully support that choice.
The Biggest Challenges: Not About Gender
Despite their differences, the biggest challenges this family faces are the same as any other:
“Honestly, the toughest challenges are just regular parenting issues that have nothing to do with gender. It’s just raising toddlers.”
For them, avoiding gender imposition isn’t a constant topic.
“Gender is a personal identity. Almost everyone on this planet is assigned a gender as a child, and for most people, that works. But for those of us who are transgender, that assignment was radically different from how we felt inside.”
Freedom of Choice—The Greatest Value
Hazel’s family believes that gender is something each person should define and express for themselves.
“At the end of the day, what matters most is that everyone gets to decide what gender means to them, what it is, and how they express it.”
A Special Message to Society
Despite facing criticism, this family stands firm in their beliefs. They hope society will understand that:
Children deserve the freedom to grow up without gender restrictions.
Being different is not negative—it’s an opportunity for each person to become their true self.
Parents should listen, respect, and support their children in discovering who they are.
What do you think about raising kids without imposing gender? Is society ready to accept this kind of diversity? Share your thoughts!
This is the story of an extraordinary family, where every child is free to grow up true to themselves—no barriers, no prejudices—a journey full of challenges, but also overflowing with love and hope.
