“I was living Elvis’s life.”

“It was all about him.”

“I mean, I was very much in love with Elvis.”

“Very much, but—”

“It strikes me you still are.”

“I am still very much in love with him.”

“I didn’t leave him because I didn’t love him.”

“I just couldn’t live the life.”

In September of 2025, a woman of eighty sits across from Lee Cowan of CBS Sunday Morning.

She has written a new book, and he has come to ask her about the man she married in 1967.

She tells him she was very much in love with Elvis.

Very much.

And she says more.

She says she is still very much in love with him.

He has been gone for forty-eight years.

They had been divorced for almost four years when he died.

And here she is at eighty saying it on national television.

And she answers the question people have asked for half a century.

Why she left.

She says she did not leave him because she did not love him.

She says she just could not live the life.

You know her face.

You have seen it on the wedding day in Las Vegas beside Elvis.

You saw it again years later on Dallas and in The Naked Gun.

Her name is Priscilla Presley.

She was born on the 24th of May, 1945.

Today she is eighty-one years old.

For decades, other people told her story.

Biographers, filmmakers, the men who worked for Elvis.

She told it herself once in a book in 1985.

Now in her eighties, she is telling it again in a new memoir, on CBS, and on the Today Show, on stages in Las Vegas, Connecticut, and Detroit.

And in short notes, she posts for the world on his birthday.

She has talked about the other women, about the pills and the doctors who would not say no, about the Colonel, about the telephone call from her nine-year-old daughter on the day he died, about why she never married again.

And she has said in her own words what she thinks Elvis Presley really was.

This is Priscilla Presley finally opening up in her own words.

The book is called Softly: As I Leave You.

The subtitle is Life After Elvis.

It came out on the 23rd of September, 2025, from Grand Central Publishing.

She wrote it with Mary Jane Ross.

Her first book, Elvis and Me, had come out forty years earlier in 1985.

That one told the story of the marriage.

This one begins where the marriage ends.

It follows her through the years as a single mother, the work of saving Graceland and building Elvis Presley Enterprises, the acting, and the family losses that came later.

It ends shortly after the death of her daughter.

Publishers Weekly called it a heartfelt account of building a life of one’s own.

When the book was announced in April of 2025, she said it covered eight decades of her life.

She said writing it had been a learning experience on many levels.

And she said something about Elvis that set the tone for everything that followed.

She said she had always loved and admired him, but that more than four decades of living without him had taught her how rare and extraordinary he was as a human being.

She said she had reflected deeply both on herself and on those she loves.

And she said that reliving the trauma in her life had also been challenging.

Later, she told Hello magazine that the book took her more than eleven months to finish.

She said it meant a lot of remembering wonderful times and difficult times and that you are reliving your life.

On the 22nd of September, she sat down with Savannah Guthrie on the Today Show.

She was asked about Elvis more than four decades after his death.

She called him still the love of her life.

Absolutely.

And she talked about the hardest part of the marriage.

In the years after their wedding, Elvis was often working in Las Vegas.

Priscilla told the Today Show that their life was very different then, very, very different.

She said they had a second home in Palm Springs and that she would go there to check on it while he was working in Las Vegas.

And she said she was reading the mail.

She said that the things she was reading in those letters she really disapproved of and did not like.

She said there were women who would go and meet Elvis at the house on weekends when he went there and that it was another life.

And then she said the sentence that People magazine put in its headline.

She said that he was still a good husband, but that it was just too many of us.

In the same conversation, she called him very, very special.

This was not new.

As far back as 1978, the year after he died, she gave an interview to People magazine.

She told them that her life had been his life.

He had to be happy.

She said her problems were secondary.

She told Lee Cowan the same thing in different words.

She said she had been living Elvis’s life.

It was all about him.

And she said she had to find herself.

She said he would always go back to Memphis because that was where home was.

And she said she wanted him for herself.

He tried to reassure her.

She remembered him telling her she did not have to worry.

She never had to worry.

But she told CBS she could not live a life of being in panic all the time, of losing him to someone else.

In October of 2025, she went on Irish television on the Late Late Show.

According to an Irish News report of the interview, she laughed when she described Graceland in those years.

She said there were girls everywhere and that it was like the movie Girls! Girls! Girls!

She told Lee Cowan that the end of the marriage is where her new book begins.

Years earlier, in November of 2016 on British television on the program Loose Women, she put it plainly.

She said she did not divorce him because she did not love him.

She said he was the love of her life truly.

And she said that if anything, she left because she needed to find out what the world was like.

As recently as February of 2026, she was still talking about those years.

At a luncheon in Palm Beach, Florida on the 18th of February, she talked about her early years with Elvis at Graceland when she was still a schoolgirl.

She said she dealt with it.

She said she had to.

And then she said something more.

She said she was struggling to be honest.

She said she did not want to burden Elvis because he had a lot going on.

Then there are the pills.

In March of 2018, at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, she came to the premiere of a new documentary about him, Elvis Presley: The Searcher, which she had helped to produce.

She took on the question people have asked for decades: why no one around Elvis did anything.

She said it was difficult for all of them.

She said they certainly did not see it coming, but they certainly saw the journey he was taking.

She said it began in Germany in the Army.

She said the pills were given to the soldiers over there to keep them awake.

He had maneuvers he had to do late at night.

She said that is how he started.

And she said something about the men around him.

She said that the people in the inner group did try, but in her words, you did not tell Elvis Presley what to do.

She said he was in uncharted territory truly and that he tried to do it alone.

And she said he knew what he was doing.

In 2022, standing on the front lawn of Graceland, she told Chris Connelly of ABC News that she had to handle Elvis a little delicately in those later years because he was going through a lot of different things at that time.

She said it became more and more frightening as time went by.

And she said it was heartbreaking that he could not admit he had a problem.

In September of 2025, Lee Cowan asked her whether anyone could have talked him out of it.

She said no.

She said you could not convince Elvis of anything unless he believed in it himself.

And she pointed to the doctors who gave him whatever he wanted.

She told CBS that he was Elvis and you were not going to say no to Elvis.

Then there is the man who managed him.

For most of his career, Elvis Presley was managed by Colonel Tom Parker.

In 2022, a new film told the story of Elvis and the Colonel.

In August of 2022, on the 45th anniversary of his death, she told the Today Show which scenes had been hardest to watch.

They were the scenes between Elvis and the Colonel.

She said Elvis wanted to do movies, serious movies.

She said that Colonel Parker probably should have stayed a publicist.

She said the Colonel did not take Elvis where he wanted to be and that it was hard because she lived it.

She said she lived through the arguments.

She said she lived through Elvis trying to explain that he did not want to do the movies with all the girls and the beaches and everything.

She told ABC News that it was not good at all.

And she said that when Elvis was upset, he let everyone know it.

She said she got to see his temperament in every way.

But in the same interview, standing on the lawn at Graceland, she said that she adored him.

She said she did not know anyone who did not adore Elvis.

She said he was fun to be with and that they had fun everywhere they went.

And she said one good thing through all of it was that they carried on their loving relationship throughout the divorce and everything.

Elvis Presley died in 1977.

Priscilla was thirty-two years old.

She never married again.

For decades, people asked her why.

In the autumn of 2023, during an evening of questions from the audience in Las Vegas, she answered.

She said that to be honest, she never wanted to marry after him.

She said she never had any desire.

And then she said the line that People magazine reported.

She said no one could ever match him.

She also told that audience that Elvis could never have handled it if she had remarried while he was alive.

She said she just did not think he could handle that.

That same night, she spoke about why there were no more children with Elvis.

She said he did have a bit of guilt that he was not around that much when Lisa was younger and that he felt he was not around enough to give a lot of attention to another child.

In 2025, talking with Lee Cowan about the fact that neither of them ever remarried, she laughed and she said they could not find anyone else.

In March of 2024, at another of her evenings in Connecticut, she said it again.

She told the crowd not to get her wrong.

She said she had never not loved Elvis to that day.

She called him an amazing human being.

And before her evening in Detroit that same year, she told the Detroit Free Press that she never stopped loving Elvis Presley.

Never.

She said she loves him to this day.

So who was this girl, and how did she come to say all of this?

She was born Priscilla Ann Wagner in a Navy hospital in Brooklyn, New York on the 24th of May, 1945.

Her father, James Wagner, was a Navy pilot.

When she was about five months old, he was killed in a plane crash.

Her mother, Ann, married again in 1948.

Her new husband was an Air Force officer named Paul Beaulieu.

And in 1950, Priscilla’s name was legally changed to Beaulieu.

An Air Force family moves.

They lived in one town after another, and in 1956 they settled for a while in Del Valle, Texas.

Then Paul Beaulieu was sent overseas to Wiesbaden in West Germany.

There the family lived first in a hotel and then in a rented apartment.

That is where the story everyone knows begins.

On the 13th of September, 1959, a man from the Air Force named Currie Grant brought her to a rented house in the town of Bad Nauheim.

Elvis Presley was living there while he served in the Army.

She was fourteen years old.

He was twenty-four.

She has spoken about the age difference directly in her own words.

In her 1985 book, she wrote that when Elvis asked what grade she was in, she told him ninth grade.

And she wrote that he said she was just a baby.

At the Venice Film Festival in 2023, she said it had been very difficult for her parents to understand why Elvis would be so interested in her.

She said she really thought it was because she was more of a listener.

She said that in Germany, Elvis poured his heart out to her in every way.

His fears, his hopes, and the loss of his mother, who had died the year before.

She said she was the person who sat there to listen and to comfort him.

And she said that was really their connection.

She told the reporters in Venice that people assumed their relationship then was a physical one.

She said it was not.

She said he was very kind, very soft, very loving, and that he respected the fact that she was only fourteen years old.

She said she did not know why he put so much trust in her, but he did.

She said she never ever told anyone that she was seeing him, not even at school.

And she said that was another thing he loved about her.

She never gave him up in any way.

In October of 2025 on Irish television, she described it simply.

She said he did not know anyone there and they just built a connection.

Love, she said, was in the air.

On the 2nd of March, 1960, Elvis flew home to America.

She stayed behind in Germany.

In March of 1963, her parents agreed to let her move to Memphis.

She enrolled at Immaculate Conception, a Catholic school for girls.

At first, she lived with Elvis’s father, Vernon, and his wife, Dee.

In February of 2026, at that luncheon, she described the nights.

She said they saw a lot of movies.

The theater would call and they could request a film, and they saw them first.

She said they would have dinner at about ten every night and sometimes they would see one, two, three, four movies all night long.

She laughed and said she was always late for school.

She also remembered who she talked to.

She said she would sit with Elvis’s grandmother and they would talk and laugh and his grandmother would tell her stories about her own childhood and about how close she had been to Elvis’s mother.

Shortly before Christmas of 1966, Elvis proposed.

In the 2005 documentary Elvis by the Presleys, she remembered that one day he showed her the ring and simply asked her to marry him.

Parade magazine, looking back on the wedding in January of 2026, reported her saying that even though they were perfectly content the way they were at that time, it was not nice for people to live together.

And in a 1973 interview with Ladies’ Home Journal, she said her parents thought it was time.

They had been dating for years.

On the 1st of May, 1967, they were married at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas.

The ceremony lasted about eight minutes.

She told Ladies’ Home Journal that as a wedding present, Elvis flew in her mother and father.

She said she remembered how overwhelmed they were and how happy.

In Elvis by the Presleys, she called the wedding the best-kept secret.

She said it all had to be properly planned because they did not want it to turn into a circus.

And she said they were happy to be married and most happy that they pulled it off.

On the 1st of May, 2023, more than half a century later, she posted the wedding photograph for the world.

She wrote that it was a very special day for Elvis and her.

Nine months after the wedding, on the 1st of February, 1968, their daughter was born.

They named her Lisa Marie.

In her new book, according to Publishers Weekly, she describes the strain that came into the marriage after Lisa Marie was born.

But she also wrote this.

She wrote that with her, Elvis was usually gentle and often tender.

She wrote that he was extremely generous, that he bought her beautiful things, expensive gifts, amazing jewelry, and she wrote that she had much to be grateful for in her marriage.

Lisa Marie would be their only child.

At the 92nd Street Y in New York on the 24th of September, 2025, in a conversation with the broadcaster Budd Mishkin, she spoke about the bond between that little girl and her father.

She said that when Lisa Marie was nine or ten, she would tell people she was Lisa Presley and ask them if they knew who her dad was.

She said Lisa loved her name.

In 1972, she left.

They separated on the 23rd of February, 1972.

The divorce was final on the 9th of October, 1973.

They shared custody of their daughter.

In Elvis and Me in 1985, she wrote about her relationship with a karate instructor named Mike Stone.

CBS has noted that both of them had affairs during the marriage.

What she has said since is that the leaving did not end the love.

In Venice, she said that their relationship went on until she left and that it was not because she did not love him.

She said he was the love of her life.

She said it was the lifestyle that was so difficult for her and that she thought any woman could relate to that.

And she said it did not mar their relationship.

She said they remained very close, that they had their daughter, and that she made sure he saw Lisa all the time.

She said it was like they never left each other.

In February of 2025, at a fan convention in Orlando, Florida, she said they kept their relationship after the divorce.

She said he would drop by her home unannounced.

Once, she said, it was two in the morning, she knew who it was, and she hurried to the door and they talked for a couple of hours.

Parade magazine, reporting on that panel, wrote that she said she decided to leave after she found letters from other women, and she told that audience why she had gone in the first place.

She said he was famous, he was loving, he was a beautiful, beautiful man, and she said she just could not take it.

She said it was not a good life for her.

On Irish television in 2025, as the Irish News report quoted her, she said that even after the divorce in 1973, the bond never faded.

She said she loved him as much the day she left as she did when she first met him.

In her new book, she describes a visit from Elvis after the divorce.

There was a moment, she wrote, and then he said, “Someday. Maybe someday.”

On the Today Show, she told Savannah Guthrie that those were hopes and dreams and that it would have been great if it had happened.

She told Hello magazine that they always remained friendly and would still get together.

She said she would bring their daughter to see her dad perform and she made sure the two of them spent a lot of time together.

She said they still cared for each other.

She said he was fun to be with and that he just had a great sense of humor.

Then came the 16th of August, 1977.

That summer, Lisa Marie was nine years old and she was staying with her father at Graceland.

Priscilla was in Los Angeles.

In her new book, she tells what happened that day in detail.

She wrote that she was on her way to meet her sister for lunch on Melrose Avenue.

Word came that something had happened and she turned the car around and raced home.

On the telephone was Joe Esposito, one of the men closest to Elvis.

She wrote that he called her by her nickname, Cilla, and told her that Elvis was dead, that they had lost him.

And then her daughter called.

She wrote that Lisa called out, “Mommy, Mommy,” and told her that something had happened to Daddy and that everybody was crying.

She wrote that she told Lisa she knew.

She called her baby.

She reassured her that Daddy’s plane was coming soon to bring her mother to Memphis, and she told Lisa to wait with Grandma until she got there.

She wrote that her heart plummeted when Joe confirmed that Lisa had seen her father’s body.

She told Lee Cowan that the men closest to Elvis were calling her.

She said she got on a plane to be with her daughter.

She said it was probably the hardest thing a mother could be involved in.

She said you cannot make the hurt go away.

And she said that in many ways she was thankful Lisa had been there.

She said Lisa got to be with him and saw him for the last time.

Thank God.

She said when they got to Graceland, she wrote, she found Lisa playing in the yard with a friend.

She wrote that what followed was overwhelming and that there was not yet room for their own grief.

She wrote that she and Lisa waited until they could be alone with Elvis to say goodbye.

She had bought a silver bracelet engraved with the words “I love you, Daddy” for Lisa to give him.

Afterward, she wrote, she tried to shield Lisa from the news coverage.

In the checkout line, she would turn the magazines with headlines around so Lisa would not see them.

She sent her daughter to summer camp and later she traveled to England and then on to Europe.

Elvis Presley was forty-two years old.

After his death, his father, Vernon, ran the estate.

When Vernon died in 1979, Priscilla took his place.

She told CBS that the estate was losing money and that the advisers told her to sell Graceland.

She said she looked at the attorney who was telling her this and told him it would never happen, ever.

Instead, she opened the house to the public.

On the 7th of June, 1982, the doors of Graceland opened to visitors.

The estate made back its investment within about four weeks.

She went on to run Elvis Presley Enterprises as its chair and president, and under her, the trust grew to be worth more than $100 million.

When Lisa Marie turned twenty-five in 1993, the inheritance passed to her.

In August of 2022, on the 45th anniversary of his death, she told the Today Show it was unbelievable how many people still come to see Elvis.

She said 30,000 people had come to the candlelight vigil the night before.

And she built a life of her own.

She played Jenna Wade on Dallas from 1983 to 1988.

In 1988, she played Jane Spencer in The Naked Gun, her first comedy, and she came back for two sequels.

In 1985, she published Elvis and Me.

Three years later, ABC turned it into a miniseries with Susan Walters playing her and Dale Midkiff as Elvis.

In 1984, she met a man named Marco Garibaldi.

They were together for about twenty-two years until 2006.

On the 1st of March, 1987, their son Navarone was born.

She left Dallas after his birth.

She also started businesses of her own and she took acting classes.

She told CBS that the classes helped her with her shyness.

In her new book, she writes that one of those classes frightened her.

But she never married Marco Garibaldi, and she never married anyone else.

In 2022, Baz Luhrmann released his film Elvis, with Austin Butler as Elvis, Olivia DeJonge as Priscilla, and Tom Hanks as the Colonel.

Before it opened, she wrote to her fans that hearing her daughter talk about how much she loved the film had moved her to tears.

She praised Baz, Tom, Austin, and Olivia and said it was beautifully done.

She told ABC News that while she was watching, she kept thinking that she wished he could see it.

She called it perfection.

She said it was a movie he would have really loved, showing who he was, what he was striving for, and what his dreams were.

She said it was so strange to see her own life up on the screen.

And of the actress who played her, Olivia DeJonge, she said she was so happy that she was sensitive and that she was caring.

She said she was pleasantly surprised.

She told the Today Show that she watched it with Elvis’s friend Jerry Schilling.

She said that at the end, the two of them just said, “Wow, this is Elvis.”

The next year came a film about her.

Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla was based on Elvis and Me, and Priscilla herself was an executive producer.

On the 4th of September, 2023, it had its premiere at the Venice Film Festival.

At the press conference, tears came to her eyes.

She said it was very difficult to sit and watch a film about yourself, about your life, about your love.

She said Sofia had done an amazing job, that she had done her homework, and that the two of them had spoken a couple of times.

She said she really put everything out for her that she could.

And once more, in front of the world’s press, she said that Elvis was the love of her life.

She did have one objection, and she said so.

At that convention in Orlando in February of 2025, she was asked about the film.

People magazine reported her answer.

She said the only thing was the ending.

She said she was not really happy about it.

She said it did not end that way.

She said that she and Elvis ended very lovingly.

On the 10th of January, 2023, Austin Butler won the Golden Globe for playing Elvis.

Priscilla and Lisa Marie were there together.

Two days later, Priscilla posted a photograph on Instagram.

She wrote that her beloved daughter, Lisa Marie, had been rushed to the hospital and she asked people to keep Lisa and the family in their prayers.

That same day, the 12th of January, she gave a statement to NBC News.

She said it was with a heavy heart that she had to share the devastating news that her beautiful daughter had left them.

She called Lisa Marie the most passionate, strong, and loving woman she had ever known.

Lisa Marie Presley was fifty-four years old.

Ten days later, on the 22nd of January, family and fans gathered on the lawn at Graceland for a memorial.

Priscilla stood before them and read a poem written by one of Lisa Marie’s daughters.

Then she said that their hearts were broken.

She said, “Lisa, we all love you.”

Lisa Marie was laid to rest in the meditation garden at Graceland beside her son.

It was not the first loss.

In July of 2020, Lisa Marie’s son, Benjamin Keough, had died at the age of twenty-seven.

Afterward, Priscilla wrote that those were some of the darkest days of her family’s life and that the shock of losing Ben had been devastating.

In the months after Lisa Marie’s death, there was a disagreement in the family over her trust.

It was settled in May of 2023.

Priscilla said publicly that there had never been any lawsuit filed against her beloved granddaughter and that the Presley family was stronger than ever.

Under the agreement, her granddaughter, the actress Riley Keough, became the sole trustee, and Priscilla became a special adviser to the trust, and she was given the right to be buried at Graceland in the meditation garden in the place closest to Elvis.

Riley Keough later told Vanity Fair that things with Grandma would be happy.

She has spoken about her daughter carefully and not often.

In November of 2023, she sat down with Piers Morgan on British television.

She said the loss was unbearable.

She said it was still shocking that they did not have her.

And she remembered one last embrace.

She said that hug was the last hug she gave her.

She told Piers Morgan that losing Ben had been the hardest thing for Lisa.

She said Ben was the love of Lisa’s life.

She told Lee Cowan that she misses Lisa every day.

She said she has to let that go and live her life.

But she said that Lisa’s spirit is still with her very, very much.

At that evening in New York in September of 2025, she said that she had found a letter Lisa Marie had written basically to herself.

It was about her father and about all the things she felt she had missed with him.

Priscilla said it literally broke her heart because that relationship with him had meant everything to Lisa.

On the second anniversary in January of 2025, she wrote to Lisa on Instagram that she missed her more than words can say.

She wrote that she wished she could hold her, talk to her, and see her smile just one more time.

She wrote that she wished Lisa could see how much she is still loved.

On the 12th of January, 2026, three years to the day, she posted an old photograph of Lisa Marie as a little girl.

She wrote that it had been three years since she last heard Lisa’s voice and that not a day goes by that she does not miss her.

She wrote that through everything, their bond was theirs alone.

Imperfect, deep, and unbreakable.

She wrote that she missed her more than words can say.

“My little Lisa Marie,” she called her, and she signed it, “Love always, Mom.”

So how does Priscilla Presley live now at eighty-one?

She told CBS that she does not want to hold on to bad things.

She said that when you stop and think about it, we are not here that long.

In her book, she wrote that people her age often have bucket lists and that she does not because she has already done what she dreamed of doing.

And on Irish television, she said she feels in charge of herself now and that gives her strength.

She still works.

In March of 2025, at the Tennessee State Capitol in Nashville, Governor Bill Lee named her a Colonel Aide-de-Camp, which Axios described as Tennessee’s highest civilian honor.

It was for her work preserving the state’s musical heritage, including saving Graceland.

She still travels with her evening of stories, the show she calls An Evening with Priscilla Presley.

It began as a tour alongside the film Priscilla, and it has kept going.

She brings home movies of Elvis that most people have never seen and she takes questions from the audience.

In January of 2026, she announced that she would be a guest at a fan convention in Kansas City at the end of March.

She wrote that she was looking forward to that one.

In March of 2026, she was in Randers, Denmark, at a museum devoted to Elvis.

In July, she was a guest at a summer gala on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

And this October, her evening was booked in Oslo, Norway, and in Basel, Switzerland.

She told Hello magazine that she loves doing it.

She said she loves talking about all of it, sharing and answering people’s questions.

Once she said a fan asked her whether Elvis wore a toupee, and she said no, that was not true.

She said that was his beautiful hair.

And she told the Detroit Free Press that young boys come to her shows dressed like Elvis.

She said he was still being asked about so many years after he passed and that she did not think he ever would have imagined it.

“Elvis thought people would forget him,” she said. “If he only knew.”

On the 8th of January, 2026, Elvis Presley would have turned ninety-one.

Priscilla was asked what he would be doing if he were still here.

She told Hello magazine that she thinks he would be doing the same thing in life, singing and touring.

She said he loved it.

On his birthday, she posted a note to him on Instagram.

She wrote that it was hard to believe he would be ninety-one that day.

“Surely,” she wrote, “just as handsome as ever.”

In August of 2025, on the 48th anniversary of his death, she wrote to him again.

She wrote that after all these years, she still smiles when she thinks of the little moments they shared.

She wrote that the world remembers his fame, but she remembers his love and kindness at home.

She wrote that even after they had their problems, they still kept an undeniable connection.

And she signed it “Satnin,” a pet name Elvis is said to have first used for his mother and then for her.

So this is what Priscilla Presley has finally said in her own words.

She has said that she left him because she could not live the life and because she had to find herself.

She has said there were too many of them and that she was struggling and did not want to burden him.

She has said that the Colonel held him back and that no one could say no to Elvis.

She has said that in Germany at fourteen she was the one who listened and that he poured out his heart to her about his mother.

She has said that even after the divorce, they ended very lovingly.

She has said that no one could ever match him, and she has said that she is still very much in love with him.

When her book was announced, she said that she lives with grief and that she has learned it never goes away.

She said she will never outlive it, but that she moves through it one day at a time.

She said she carries every one of the people she has lost with her.

She said she feels their presence and that she believes her journey will eventually bring them back to one another.

And in the new book, she wrote about the kind of love people spend their whole lives looking for.

She wrote that people long for true love, the kind where you fall deeper and deeper until you realize it is bottomless.

She wrote that she found it before she was old enough to understand it.

And she wrote that she lost the chance to find it again with Elvis because he never had the chance to grow old.

On his 91st birthday, she said it one more time.
