*”I almost walked away,”* she admitted.

She nodded.

Carter picked up his sandpaper again. *”That’s the part that matters.”*

The Whitcomb Grand Hotel still stands on the corner where the trolley used to turn. The marble is still polished. The chandeliers still glow. The string quartet still plays on special occasions.

But if you walk past the reception desk and turn left at the old wooden staircase—the one that doesn’t match the rest of the hotel, the one that has been preserved exactly as it was—you will find a narrow corridor that was locked for a very long time.

At the end of that corridor is a small room. The door is open now. Inside, there is a table, a photograph, a brass key, and a handkerchief stitched with two letters.

On the inside of the door frame, carved into the pine, you can still see the initials: *W.W.* and *M.W.*, twined together by a young man who loved a young woman and believed—against all evidence—that he could build something that would last.

He was right.

It just took the rest of the world a little longer to notice.
