I Died for 4 Minutes – Jesus Explained Why We Yawn During Prayer
Before You Scroll Past This
Before you scroll past this, listen carefully. If you yawn, feel unusually sleepy, or struggle to stay awake the moment you begin praying, do not dismiss it as simple tiredness. What you’re about to hear may completely change the way you understand it.
Jesus showed me that there are three reasons this can happen during prayer, and the third one is something I never expected to hear.
My name is Paula. I’m 34 years old, a mom of two from Georgia, and I died on a Tuesday afternoon in March 2023. I need to tell you what Jesus told me because He specifically talked about this. About yawning. About falling asleep in prayer. About what is actually happening when your body shuts down the moment you open your mouth to pray.
I promise you, by the end of this, you will never look at that yawning the same way again. Because the difference between a tired body, spiritual warfare, and real breakthrough could completely change how you understand prayer.
The Day I Died
It all started when I went in for what the doctors called a routine procedure. Appendix removal. I had been having pain for two days and finally went to the hospital when it got unbearable. My husband Marcus was in the waiting room with our kids, seven-year-old Caleb and five-year-old Naomi. He thought he’d see me in about two hours.
He didn’t.
My appendix had already ruptured by the time they opened me up, and the infection had spread faster than they expected. They told Marcus later that my heart stopped for approximately four minutes and thirty seconds before they brought me back.
Four and a half minutes. Long enough for what I’m about to tell you to happen.
There was no slow transition. No tunnel I floated through gradually. One second I was on the operating table, and the next second I was somewhere else entirely.
The place I was in had light everywhere, but it wasn’t like sunlight. It wasn’t coming from any direction. It was just present. And I knew I wasn’t alone.
He was there. And I knew exactly who He was before He said a single word. You just know. There’s no confusion, no wondering. Your spirit recognizes Him the way your lungs recognize oxygen. Immediately. Completely.
Jesus looked at me, and the first thing He said wasn’t what I expected. It wasn’t a judgment. It wasn’t a welcome. It was a question.
He said, “Paula, why do you fight against Me when you come to Me?”
And I didn’t understand what He meant. Not yet.
He said, “I want to show you something.”
And this is the part where I need you to understand. We didn’t talk about my life review. We didn’t go through my sins or my accomplishments. We didn’t do any of what I had assumed an afterlife experience would look like.
Instead, Jesus sat with me, and He began to talk about one very specific thing: prayer. And more specifically, why people fall asleep and yawn and zone out every time they try to pray.
I know that sounds strange. I know you might be thinking, of all the things to talk about with Jesus, why that? But I think He knew exactly what I needed to hear. And I think He knew I would come back and tell others. Because He kept saying, “Tell them this. Make sure they understand this.”
The First Reason: Your Flesh Is Not Trained
The first thing He said was this. He said, “Paula, your body and your spirit are at war, and most people don’t realize the war is happening.”
He showed me something like a picture, almost like a scene playing out in front of me. I saw a woman kneeling down to pray. She had been fine all evening. Watching television. Scrolling on her phone. Talking to her family. Full of energy.
But the moment she closed her eyes and began to speak to God, her head started drooping. Her eyelids got heavy. She started yawning, one yawn after another. And eventually she just gave up and went to bed.
Jesus pointed at her and He said, “Look at what just happened.”
I said, “She fell asleep.”
He said, “No. Her flesh won.”
He explained it to me like this. He said that the human body has been trained. Every single day, people train their bodies without even realizing it. They give their best energy to work. They give full attention to entertainment. They give focused hours to social media and conversations and hobbies.
And then when it comes time to pray, they come to God with whatever is left over. The tired minutes. The half-awake hours. The last bit of energy at the end of the day before the body shuts down.
He said, “When you always bring Me your leftovers, your body learns to associate My presence with rest. And then it rests. And you call it an attack. But first, you must be honest. You trained it to do that.”
That hit me hard because I knew He was right. I knew exactly how many times I had prayed lying in bed and fallen asleep within minutes. And I had always thought it was spiritual warfare or tiredness. I had never once thought, “Maybe I trained my body to sleep every time it gets quiet and still.”
Jesus said, “I told My disciples the same thing. In the Garden of Gethsemane, I needed them to watch and pray, and they kept falling asleep. Not because they didn’t love Me, but because their flesh had not been trained to fight in the hour of prayer.”
He quoted it to me directly. Matthew 26:41. “Watch and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
And then He explained that word “watch.” He said that the original word means to stay awake with a purpose. To be alert like a guard on duty. He said, “When I told them to watch, I was telling them, ‘This hour requires your full presence. Something is happening in the spirit realm right now, and I need you awake in it.'”
He said the same thing is happening every time someone sits down to pray today. The spirit realm is active. Something is being engaged. And the flesh wants to check out.
He looked at me very directly, and He said, “Yawning when you pray is not proof that you are unspiritual. But it is proof that your body has not yet learned to submit to your spirit. And you cannot let it win every time.”
He told me that the way to fight this is not to condemn yourself when it happens. It’s to change your posture. He said, “Stand up. Walk while you pray. Turn on a light. Speak out loud. Your body is a student. Teach it that prayer is not sleep. It will learn.”
He said something I haven’t forgotten since. He said, “You can watch entertainment for three hours without one yawn, but you yawn in three minutes of prayer. That is not about tiredness. That is about what you have been feeding. A spirit that is starved will always lose to a body that is fed. Feed your spirit.”
And He said, “Tell them. Tell them to give Me some of their best hours. Not the minutes nobody else wanted. Not the leftovers. I am a King. Come to Me like you’re entering a meeting with a King, not background noise while you’re falling asleep.”
But then He shifted, and this is where it got heavier. He said, “Now let me show you the second reason.”
The Second Reason: Spiritual Warfare
The scene changed. It wasn’t just a picture this time. I could feel something in the atmosphere around us change. Like the weight of the conversation increased.

He said, “Paula, prayer is not just talking. Prayer is wrestling.”
He reminded me of Ephesians 6:12. “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
That wrestling does not happen in the street. It does not happen in the marketplace. It happens in prayer. When a person gets on their knees and begins to pray sincerely, they are stepping into a battlefield. And the enemy knows it.
Then He said something that I need you to hear carefully. If the enemy cannot stop you from praying, his next strategy is to make your prayer weak. To make it lazy. To make it half asleep. To make you feel like nothing is happening so that you give up before the breakthrough comes.
He told me there’s something in Scripture called the spirit of slumber. He took me to Romans 11:8. “God gave them a spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear.”
He said, “Spiritual sleep is a real condition, and the enemy knows how to trigger it. He does not always come loudly. He does not always show himself clearly. Sometimes he simply leans on your weakness. He sends heaviness. He sends dullness. He makes your eyelids heavy exactly at the moment you start to press in.”
Jesus told me this. He said, “The devil does not always need to silence your mouth if he can put your soul to sleep.”
That sentence wrecked me. I just sat there and let it sink in.
He said, “Think about this pattern. You sit down to pray, and suddenly you cannot keep your eyes open. You stand up and the yawning starts, one after another. But the moment you stop praying and pick up your phone, you feel completely awake and fine. That is not natural tiredness. That is resistance. That is a spirit of slumber being activated the moment you step into that spiritual space.”
He explained that when a person begins to pray, things start happening in the spirit realm whether they feel it or not. He said, “When you open your mouth and pray in My name, you’re shining light into dark places. You are breaking agreements that the enemy had put in place. You are covering your life with something that darkness cannot touch. Hell is not comfortable with that.”
So instead of confronting you directly, the enemy sends dullness. He sends the yawn. He makes you feel like nothing is happening. And if he can make you feel like prayer is pointless and you’re just talking to a ceiling, he has won without ever touching you directly.
Jesus looked at me with a kind of urgency I cannot describe in words. He said, “Tell them not to treat this as a joke. When they notice this pattern, when the yawning always comes in prayer but never anywhere else, that is a signal. That is proof that prayer is doing something. The flesh panics. The enemy responds because something real is being stirred.”
He told me what to do about it. He said, “Plead the blood before you start. If you pray in tongues, use it. Pray out loud. Use the Word as a weapon. Say out loud, ‘Lord, wake me up. I refuse to be spiritually asleep in Your presence. I rebuke every spirit of slumber over my mind and my body.'”
That kind of prayer moves things. The enemy cannot stay where the name of Jesus is being spoken with purpose.
And then He said something that I have repeated to so many people since I came back. “The moment you feel the heaviness come in prayer, turn it around. Say, ‘Okay, something is happening here. I will not stop.’ Use the resistance as fuel. The fact that something is fighting you is proof that something real is at stake.”
Then He paused, and I noticed the atmosphere felt different again. Less heavy. More gentle.
He said, “But Paula, I need to show you the third reason. Because not every yawn in prayer is an attack. Sometimes it is something else entirely.”
The Third Reason: Spiritual Release
I didn’t understand what He meant. I thought yawning in prayer was always either laziness or the enemy. I didn’t know there was a third category.
He said, “Sometimes when a person yawns repeatedly during prayer, it is a sign that something is leaving. That something is being released.”
He walked me through this carefully. He explained that human beings are not just spirits. They are spirits living in bodies. And when spiritual things happen, the body responds.
He said, “When I move in someone’s life and begin to lift burdens off them, the body does not always stay still and silent. Sometimes it coughs. Sometimes it cries. Sometimes it shakes. Sometimes it yawns repeatedly and feels like something is coming off of them.”
He took me to Isaiah 10:27. “And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck. And the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.”
A yoke is a spiritual burden. It is something that sits on a person and controls them and weighs them down. Generational patterns are yokes. Fear is a yoke. Lust is a yoke. Anger that was passed down through a family line is a yoke.
And when someone prays sincerely, especially prayers of repentance or prayers that break old patterns, His anointing begins to destroy those yokes.
He said, “And as those things break in the spirit, the body can respond. Repeated yawning. Deep sighing. A sense of something lifting. The person may not even feel emotional about it. But something is shifting, and the body is exhaling the pressure of what was being carried.”
If a person is praying strongly against fear that has followed their family for generations, and they start yawning deeply again and again, and then afterward they feel lighter, clearer, like something that used to sit on their chest is gone, that is not the enemy winning. That is His Spirit cleaning something out.
I asked Him, “How do people know the difference? How do they know if the yawning is an attack or release?”
He said, “The fruit. Look at what comes after. If after prayer a person feels lighter, clearer, freer, if they notice that something that used to grip them has less power, that is the fruit of release. But if every time they pray, the yawning always pulls them away from finishing, if they always end prayer feeling more distant from Me, more dull, more like they lost, then it is likely resistance or the flesh, not cleansing. But in either case, the answer is not to stop praying. The answer is to press in. Press past the yawn. Press past the heaviness. Press past the feeling that nothing is happening. Because something is always happening when My children come to Me sincerely.”
The Fourth Truth: Resistance Proves Prayer Is Real
And then He said there was a fourth thing He wanted me to understand.
He said, “Paula, I want you to understand what it means that your prayer is resisted at all. If nothing was happening when a person prays, there would be no reason for the flesh to fight it. There would be no reason for the enemy to respond to it. The fact that your body starts yawning, the fact that you get distracted and heavy and sleepy the moment you decide to pray, is actually evidence that prayer is real. It is doing something. It matters to what is happening in the unseen realm.”
He told me about Daniel. He said, “When Daniel prayed and fasted, I dispatched the answer from heaven on the very first day he prayed. But a principality blocked the messenger for twenty-one days. Daniel did not know that. He could not see it. He just felt like nothing was happening. But he kept praying.”
He quoted Daniel 10:12 to me. The angel said to Daniel, “From the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard.”
Jesus looked at me and said, “His words were heard from day one. The answer was already moving from day one. But if Daniel had stopped on day one because he felt tired or like nothing was happening, he would never have seen what was already on the way.”
He said, “Tell people this. Every time the yawning comes, every time the heaviness hits in prayer, every time the distraction pulls at them and sleep tries to take over, they’re closer to a breakthrough than they feel. The resistance is the evidence. If nothing was at stake, nothing would be fighting them. Don’t quit. Adjust the strategy, but don’t quit.”
Pray shorter, more focused sessions through the day if long sessions are hard. Change your posture when the heaviness comes. Use worship to stir your spirit when words feel dry. Pray in the spirit when your mind goes blank. But do not let the yawn be the thing that ends the prayer every time. Turn it into a signal. If the enemy is pushing back, you’re pushing on something real. Push harder.
At some point in this conversation, I realized I had not thought once about my body on the operating table. I had not thought about my husband in the waiting room or my children. I was completely absorbed in what Jesus was saying. It felt like the most important conversation I had ever been part of.
God Is Not Angry at Your Tiredness
And then He said something that brought me back to earth in a way.
He said, “Paula, I also want to say this. I know people get tired. I know life is hard and bodies are weak. I am not angry at tiredness. The Psalms say that I know your frame. I remember that you are dust. Psalm 103:14. I created the body and I know what it can and cannot do. Rest is not unspiritual. Sleep is not a sin. But there is a difference between genuine exhaustion and using tiredness as a permanent reason to never push through in prayer. I know the difference. And deep down, so does the person praying.”
He said, “Tell them to be honest. Tell them to come to Me honestly and say, ‘Lord, I’m tired but I want You. Help me stay awake. Strengthen my inner man. Teach my body to submit to my spirit.’ That honesty is something I respond to. I honor that kind of prayer.”
And tell them to be practical. If they always pray at midnight when their body is shutting down, do not be surprised when it shuts down. Give Me some of the earlier hours. The morning. The evening before exhaustion sets in. Stop praying lying flat on a bed unless you want to fall asleep. Sit up. Walk. Kneel. Treat coming to Me like you’re coming to someone who is actually there. Because I’m actually there.
He said, “John 4:24. ‘God is a spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.’ Spirit and truth. That means your spirit must be genuinely engaged and your lifestyle must be honest before Me. You cannot come to prayer distracted and half committed and expect your spirit to be on fire. It is connected.”
Going Back
I don’t know exactly when the conversation started wrapping up. Time didn’t work the way it normally does. But at some point I knew it was coming to an end. And I felt something close to panic because I didn’t want it to end. I didn’t want to go back.
Jesus knew that. He said, “I know.” He said, “But you need to go tell them what I showed you about the yawning. About the flesh and the spirit. About the warfare in prayer. About the difference between an attack and a release. About Daniel. About the resistance being proof that something is at stake. Go tell them.”
He said one last thing that I want to make sure I get exactly right because it has stayed with me clearer than almost anything else.
“Every time one of My children opens their mouth to pray, something moves in heaven. Not eventually. Not after they feel something. From the first moment they begin, the answer starts moving. The angels start moving. The enemy starts responding. And the flesh starts fighting. All of it at once. The moment they begin. So the worst thing they can do is stop before they see it.”
He said, “Tell them to stay. Just stay. Through the yawning. Through the heaviness. Through the feeling that nothing is happening. Stay.”
And then I was back.
Waking Up Changed
The doctors were stunned. Marcus was still in the waiting room praying and not knowing what had happened. When I opened my eyes, I cried. Not from fear, but because I had left something I did not want to leave behind.
Recovery was slow. There were weeks of healing, follow-up visits, and long talks with family. Life returned little by little. But my prayer life had changed forever.
Now I understood what was happening every time I tried to pray and my body resisted. Jesus showed me three reasons why we yawn during prayer.
First, the flesh is not trained. If you have fed your body and starved your spirit, your body will treat stillness like sleep. The answer is not shame. The answer is training. Stand up. Walk. Speak out loud. Give God your better hours.
Second, there is spiritual warfare. Sometimes the enemy uses a spirit of slumber to weaken prayer. The pattern matters. If you feel fine until you pray, then suddenly get heavy and sleepy, that resistance is real. Do not quit. Pray out loud. Use the Word. Keep going.
Third, sometimes yawning is spiritual cleansing. Not every yawn is an attack. Sometimes burdens are breaking. Yokes are being destroyed. And something is leaving. If you feel lighter after prayer, the Holy Spirit may be at work.
The main truth is this: resistance in prayer proves prayer is powerful. If nothing were happening, nothing would fight you. Daniel prayed for twenty-one days before the answer was visible. Your answer may already be moving. Stay in it long enough to see it.
A Final Word to You
If you’ve been struggling to stay awake during prayer, don’t be discouraged. Don’t condemn yourself. But don’t give up either.
Train your body. Feed your spirit. Give God your best, not your leftovers.
When the heaviness comes, don’t stop. Press in. Pray out loud. Use the Word. Plead the blood.
And remember: the yawn might be your flesh fighting, the enemy resisting, or the Holy Spirit releasing. But in every case, the answer is the same.
Stay.
Just stay.
Your breakthrough is closer than you feel.
