On the follow-up episode, near the end, Steve turned to face the camera directly — something he rarely did in a way that felt personal rather than performative.
“When I was standing backstage that day,” he said, “and Jessica told me there was a man with another woman — I had already written the story. I had already cast the characters. I knew exactly how it was going to go.” He paused. “And I have been doing this long enough to know that I’m usually right about those things. Usually, when something looks like a certain kind of story, it is that story.”
He looked at Tasha and Sophia, sitting together at the edge of his peripheral vision.
“But sometimes,” he said, “sometimes you are so completely wrong that being wrong is the best thing that ever happened to you.”
Tasha was looking at her sister. Sophia was looking back. And in the space between them was thirty-three years of distance that had somehow, improbably, impossibly, closed itself up in a single afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia — on a Tuesday, under studio lights, in front of a studio audience that had no idea they were about to witness something that would stay with them for the rest of their lives.
