Kyrie Irving is often under the spotlight for other reasons but the Brooklyn Nets star has historically been very philanthropic, and it continued this week.
Often criticized for his alternative viewpoints and behaviors, Irving showed his benevolent side Monday – donating $22,000 to help a young student stay enrolled at Howard University.
Destiny Thompson, a sophomore Civil Engineering major, started a GoFundMe page with the goal of raising $6,000.
Just two days after her post went live, Irving put forward the five-figure sum, leaving Thompson overwhelmed with gratitude and happiness.

College student ‘in shock’ after receiving donation from Kyrie irving
In a video posted to Facebook, Thompson expressed her disbelief at Irving’s tremendous gesture while working a shift at Walmart.
‘I want to say thank you 1,000 times for blessing me like this Mr. Kyrie Irving,’ she said.
‘I really don’t know. I’m in shock still. I’m at work wiping down registers. I cried just a lot of tears. I’m at work, y’all. I don’t understand, like, I can’t really wrap my head around how like generous people can be.
The Nets star made the generous donation on Monday to the unsuspecting college student
‘I am so thankful for everybody that shared it, everybody that had liked, commented and gave me encouraging words, and just kind of helped me keep going and essentially.
‘I’m just so, so happy, and I’m so thankful. I never thought in a million years that anybody would give me anything, and I’m so super grateful.’
At the time of writing, $23,400 had been donated to Thompson’s cause as she looks to continue her studies at the historically black research university.
Irving has often been criticized for his occasionally left-field beliefs in recent NBA seasons
Irving’s generosity may turn some of his detractors after the free-thinking 30-year-old received widespread backlash to a link he posted of an Amazon documentary, labeled as anti-Semitic by many.
The Brooklyn star posted a link to the 2018 film ‘Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America’ is based on a 2015 book by the same name, in which Rolling Stone called as ‘venomously anti-Semitic.’
He was suspended by Brooklyn in the aftermath of the comments and comments immediately following, returning after eight games on November 20.
