Leo managed his own portion of them—a conversation with a classmate who had shown him something on a phone about his family, which Leo had handled with a directness that his teacher later described to Michael as impressive—and went about his days with the contained momentum of a child whose primary concern is the quality of his own life rather than its external perception.
On an evening in early spring, Isabella came for dinner.
This was not the first time she had come for dinner. There had been two previous occasions, both somewhat formal, with the careful quality of people who are trying to determine what kind of relationship they are actually capable of having rather than what kind they are supposed to have.
This evening was different. The formality had decreased. They had both, by this point, seen each other in enough difficult moments that the versions of themselves that people in such circumstances tend to present to each other had given way to something more accurate.
Leo had requested—with characteristic specificity—that they have pasta. Michael had made pasta. And the three of them sat at the small kitchen table while Leo explained a problem in his mathematics homework that he had already solved but wanted to explain because the method he had used was interesting and he wanted other people to know about it.

*”I meant the other things,”* she said after a pause. *”The public aspects. The attention.”*
*”We’ll manage it.”*
*”I know you will.”* A pause. *”I want to help. If you’ll let me.”*
He thought about this—not the way he thought about things he was uncertain about, but in the specific way he thought about things that he had already decided and was just making sure the decision was still the right one.
*”I’ll let you,”* he said. *”If you let me be clear about what I’m willing to take and what I’m not.”*
*”That’s the only version of it I’m offering,”* she said.
Outside the window, the city was doing what cities do in early spring: waking up from winter with the slightly disorganized energy of something that has been waiting. The light coming back into the avenues at a lower angle, now staying longer in the evenings. Giving everything a quality of renewed possibility that was not sentimental because it was real.
It happened every year. It was happening now.
Michael took the position that his mother had intended for him to have.
He did it at his own pace, on terms that were his rather than inherited, with the same methodical precision with which he had always approached things that required both thought and work. He brought to the organization a perspective that was not available elsewhere: the particular understanding that comes from knowing what a structure looks like from the outside, from the position of the person who maintains it rather than the person who benefits from it.
This perspective turned out to be both uncomfortable and valuable—which is the usual condition of genuine knowledge in institutional settings.
He did not change everything. He had enough experience with systems to know that the impulse to change everything is usually the impulse of someone who has not yet understood what the “everything” is actually for. He changed what needed to be changed, identified what needed to be identified, and was honest in both processes in a way that was sometimes uncomfortable for the people around him and consistently necessary.
Leo started at a new school in September. Not because the old one was inadequate, but because the new one had a program in technical arts that Leo had asked about with the specific focus he applied to things he actually wanted.
Michael had spoken to Leo’s previous teacher, who had said that Leo had the kind of mind that needed to be given problems that were not yet solved. The new school had those problems.
Leo walked in on his first day holding a library book he had borrowed from the old school and not yet returned. He gave it to his new teacher with the uncomplicated explanation that he had not finished it yet and had not wanted to leave it behind.

She stood for a moment outside the barrier. Michael saw her. He carried their bags to the barrier and stood on his side of it.
*”I didn’t come to ask you to stay,”* she said.
*”I know,”* he said.

*”Neither am I.”*
Leo appeared at Michael’s side and looked at Isabella with his uncomplicated evaluative attention. Then he held up the book he had been carrying—a paperback with a worn spine, something about engineering and problem-solving.
*”I’ll bring this back,”* he said.
It was unclear whether he meant the book or themselves. He offered no clarification, because he was eight years old and had learned from his father that some things are best left to mean what they mean.
Isabella looked at him for a moment. Then she crouched down to his level—which was something she had learned to do over the course of the winter—and looked at him directly.
*”Take care of your dad,”* she said.
*”Obviously,”* said Leo.
She stood. She looked at Michael.
The station was moving around them with the particular indifference of public spaces—people with their own arrivals and departures, their own weight of history and intention. The city doing what it does, regardless of what any individual person does.
*”Family isn’t what they stole from us,”* Michael said quietly, the way he said things that were true. *”It’s what we still choose to protect.”*
She held his gaze for a moment. Then she nodded once—the way people nod when something is accurate and they have decided to accept its accuracy.
The train was called. Leo was already moving toward the platform with the forward energy of a child who has places to go. Michael picked up the bags. He turned toward the platform and then stopped.
He turned back once and looked at his sister standing at the barrier in the gray light of the station.
She raised her hand.
Not a wave. Just a raised hand—a gesture that belonged to the two of them and to no ceremony.
He raised his.
Then he turned and followed his son toward the train.
The city continued around them. The light came through the station’s high windows at the particular angle that belongs to mornings that are the beginning of something.
And Leo was already talking about the book and about a problem in it that he had not yet solved but was going to. And Michael listened and walked and put one foot in front of the other—which is what people do when they are moving toward something rather than away from it.
Which is, in the end, the only direction worth traveling.
The watch on Michael’s wrist caught the station light as he walked.

Leo nodded once, satisfied, and stepped onto the train.
Michael followed him.
The doors closed.
The platform fell away.
