There’s a stretch of land where four states touch in a single point. Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado. A flat brass marker on red earth and silence in every direction. Most folks who pass through stop for ten minutes. They take a photograph. They place a hand on the cold metal. Then they drive away fast, and they can’t explain why.
They tell themselves it’s the heat. The dust. The strange way the wind seems to come from no direction at all. But the people who live near that point—the ones whose families have walked that desert for a thousand years before any state line was drawn—they know better. There is something out there. Something that has been there longer than the names we put on maps. Something that was never meant to be found by tourists with cameras and rental cars.
Before I tell you what an old man told me one evening in 1947, in a town that no longer exists, I need you to understand something. This isn’t a campfire story. This isn’t something I read in a book and decided to repeat for likes. I sat across from him on a cottonwood chair he built with his own hands. I watched his face while he spoke. And what he told me changed the way I drive through empty country after sundown.

The man’s name was Hashké Naaba. In Navajo, it means something like “Angry Warrior.” But by the time I met him, the anger had long since drained out. Only the watchfulness remained. He was eighty-one years old. A tribal elder. A hand trembler—what some people call a diagnostician in the traditional Navajo sense. His job for most of his life had been to find what was wrong with a person, an animal, a piece of land. To know whether it could be healed, or whether it could not.
I hadn’t come to ask about monsters.
I came because of a series of disappearances near the San Juan River in the late 1930s. Sheep ranchers. Two government surveyors. And a geologist from Denver named Marvin Callaway, forty-four years old, who had walked off into the desert one morning in 1936 and never came back.
His truck was found three days later, parked neatly by a dry wash. Keys still in the ignition. Canteen full. Rifle clean. Boots placed side by side beside the driver’s seat, like he’d taken them off before he left. But Marvin Callaway himself was gone.
I’d read everything I could find on the case. There wasn’t much. A column in the *Albuquerque Journal*. A short federal report that admitted, in dry bureaucratic language, that no cause of disappearance had been determined. And then a note—almost a footnote—that the local Navajo population had refused to assist in the search.
That refusal was what brought me to Hashké Naaba.
We sat across from each other at the trading post, twenty miles south of Shiprock, New Mexico. The sun was low. The shadows stretched long across the sand. A younger man translated for us, though the old man’s English turned out to be better than he let on at first.
I asked him why his people had refused to help look for Marvin Callaway.
He didn’t answer right away. He looked out across the desert at the rust-red mesas in the distance. A wind moved through the sagebrush. Somewhere far off, a horse made a single sound and then went quiet again.
Then he said, in English, slowly, as if the language was something he was carefully choosing word by word. “We did not refuse to help.”
He paused.
“We refused to call it back.”

He said the land between the four points—the land we call the Four Corners—was not empty. Had never been empty. There were places where a wise person did not stop to make a fire. There were canyons where a wise person did not speak above a whisper. And there was one thing in particular, he said, that walked that country at certain times of the year. A thing his grandfather had warned him about when he was still a young man. A thing his grandfather’s grandfather had warned of in turn.
He would not give it a name.
I asked him why.
He said that some names, when spoken aloud in the wrong place, are heard.
“You ever feel that?” he asked me. “Like something somewhere can hear you when you say a certain word out loud?”
I told him I thought maybe I had. Once or twice.
He nodded slowly. “That is how it begins. That is how it knows you.”

He did not tell this story easily. He told it the way a man tells the truth about something he wishes he had never seen.
He said that in the year we would call 1865, when the Long Walk ended and his people were forced from their land down to a place called Bosque Redondo, something changed in the desert behind them. Whatever had walked that ground before—whatever had been kept in balance by the rituals and the songs of the Diné—was now unattended.
For four years, no one sang the proper songs.
For four years, no one walked the proper paths.
For four years, the desert held its breath.
And when the Diné came home in 1868 by treaty, walking back across that long red country to the land between the four sacred mountains, they came home to a desert that had grown hungry while they were away.
He told me his grandfather—a man named Atsidi Sani in the records—had been a young boy on the walk back. And he remembered the first thing the elders did when they came in sight of the sacred mountains. They stopped. All of them, hundreds of people. And they sang.
They sang for a long time. They sang the way you sing to a relative who has been sick while you were gone. Telling them you are home now. Telling them the world is right again.
But it was not right.
“Some things had taken root in those four years,” Hashké Naaba said. “Some things had learned that the country was empty. And they had liked it empty. They were not pleased to find it occupied again.”

He said that the Anglo settlers and the soldiers and the surveyors who came after—in the years that followed—did not understand any of this. They thought the desert was just desert. They thought the silence was just silence. They thought a tall, thin shape on a far ridge at sundown was just a tree, or a fence post, or a trick of the dying light.
But the Diné knew.
And the Diné kept their distance from certain places. They did certain things at certain hours. They did not speak certain names aloud. And they survived.
The white men did not always survive.
“In the 1870s and the 1880s,” he said, “there were a number of disappearances out in that country that never made it into any newspaper. Cattlemen. Drifters. A railroad scout from St. Louis named Curtis Velmar. He walked off from his camp one night in 1878 and was never seen by another living person.”
His horse was found two weeks later. Calm. Well. Grazing peacefully with the saddle still on. His rifle was found leaning against a juniper tree—not dropped, not flung, but leaning the way a man might lean it before sitting down to rest.
There was no sign of struggle. There was no sign of him.
The Navajo who lived near where Curtis Velmar had been camping refused to enter that area for the rest of that summer. When the white sheriff from Farmington came to ask why, an old man told him only this.
“The man you’re looking for sat down at a fire that was not a fire.”
The sheriff did not understand. He went home. The case was closed.

There could be a voice that was not a voice. There could be a shape in the long red sundown that wore the form of a man—or wore the form of a thing that wanted you to *think* it was a man.
And if you walked toward it, you did not walk back.
He said the elders had a word for this thing. He would not tell me the word. He would only say that it had walked that country a very long time. That it was older than the Diné. And the Diné were old. That it had been there before the Pueblo people. And the Pueblo people had been there for a thousand years before the first European set foot on the continent.
He said it had been in that desert when the desert was still green. When there were rivers where now there are only dry beds. When mammoths moved across the plain and men hunted them with spears tipped in obsidian.
It had been there. And it was still there. And it was hungry.

Let me tell you more about Marvin Callaway, the geologist. The one whose truck was found by the wash with the keys still in it.
Marvin Callaway had been hired in the spring of 1936 by a mining concern out of Denver. They wanted him to survey the southwestern quadrant of the San Juan Basin for uranium deposits. This was years before uranium became the prize it would become during the war. But the company had heard rumors. They had seen reports out of the Belgian Congo. They thought there might be money in the rocks of the Four Corners, and they wanted a man who could tell them where to dig.
Marvin Callaway was that man.
He was forty-four years old. He had been working in mineral geology for twenty-two years. He had surveyed in the Yukon, in northern Mexico, in the high canyons of Peru. He had a wife back in Denver named Velma and two grown stepchildren from her first marriage. He was not a romantic man. He was not a fanciful man. He kept careful field notebooks in a small, precise hand. He did not believe in anything he could not measure with a ruler.
When he disappeared, the company sent a recovery team to find him. The team consisted of three men: Howard Pemberton, a forty-eight-year-old assayer; Lester Cromwell, a thirty-six-year-old camp foreman; and a guide—a Diné man named Tó Bi Yazhi, which means “Little Water”—who was hired in the town of Aneth.
Tó Bi Yazhi led them as far as the wash where the truck had been found. Then he stopped.
He pointed up the wash, into the canyon where Marvin Callaway had walked. And he said, in English, “I will wait here.”
Howard Pemberton tried to argue with him. Tried to offer him more money. Tried to threaten him. Tó Bi Yazhi did not move.
“There is no amount of money,” he said, “that would make me walk up that canyon.”

The three white men went up the canyon alone.
They were gone for two days.
When they came back, Howard Pemberton was missing. Lester Cromwell could not speak. He had a cut on his hand that he could not explain, and a piece of fabric clutched in his fist that did not belong to any of the men in the recovery party. It was a strip of canvas—the kind you might cut from a tent. It was old. The dye had faded. There were marks on it that Lester Cromwell would later say, after he could speak again, looked like writing in a language he did not recognize.
The third man—the foreman—was helped down out of the canyon by Tó Bi Yazhi. He was put in the back of the truck, wrapped in a blanket, given water. He did not speak for three days.
When he finally did speak, he said only one thing.
“Howard sat down.”
He would not explain.
For the rest of his life, Lester Cromwell refused to talk about what had happened in that canyon. He died in 1958 of natural causes in a small house in Pueblo, Colorado. His widow, going through his papers, found a sealed envelope marked simply: *Not to be opened.*
She opened it anyway.
Inside was a single sheet of paper in his handwriting, dated 1941. It said: “There was a fire that was not a fire. Howard walked toward it. I called him back. He did not turn his head. He sat down at the fire, and he was not Howard anymore. I ran. May God forgive me. I ran.”
That was all.
His widow burned the paper. She did not tell anyone what it had said until 1973, when she was dying. She told her sister, and her sister wrote it down. And that is how I came to know it.

When I described what had happened to Howard Pemberton, Hashké Naaba did not seem surprised.
He nodded slowly. He looked off into the desert. He was quiet for a long time. Then he said, “Yes. That is how it happens.”
He said that the thing which walked the Four Corners did not always take a person by force. Sometimes it called them. It made itself look like a thing they wanted to walk toward. A fire on a cold night. A voice that sounded familiar. A figure on a far ridge that for just a moment looked like a man they knew.
And the person—especially the person from outside, the person who did not know to look away—would walk toward it.
And once they sat down, he said, they did not get up.
Or rather—something got up. But it was not them.
I asked him very carefully whether this thing was what some other native peoples called a skinwalker.
He looked at me very sharply.
“We do not say that word,” he said.
He said the thing in the desert was not that. The thing in the desert was older than that. A skinwalker is a man who has chosen to become something. The thing in the desert was never a man at all.

He told me then about his grandson.
In the autumn of 1937, a year after Marvin Callaway disappeared, a young man of twenty-three named Bidzil—which means “He Is Strong”—went out to bring in some sheep that had wandered too far from the family hogan.
It was late in the day. The sun was already low.
Bidzil had been told all his life not to be out alone in the desert at sundown. Especially not in that quarter of country west of the Lukachukai range, where there was an old wash that the family had always avoided.
But the sheep had wandered. And Bidzil was young. And he was not afraid.
He went after them.
He did not come home that night.
When morning came, Hashké Naaba and three other men of the family rode out to find him. They followed his tracks. They found his horse—calm and well—tied to a juniper tree. They found the sheep, all eleven of them, gathered in a small huddle near a rock formation. Alive. Unharmed.
And about a hundred yards beyond the sheep, they found the prints where Bidzil had stopped walking.
Just stopped. In the middle of the desert. With nothing in front of him.
The prints faced west. Toward the setting sun.
Beyond the prints, in the soft red sand, there were no more tracks of any kind. Not Bidzil’s. Not any man’s. Not any thing’s.
The men stood there a long time.
Then Hashké Naaba did something he had never done before in his life. He took out a small leather pouch that had been given to him by his own grandfather, who had been given it by *his* grandfather, going back five generations. Inside the pouch was a substance. He would not tell me what it was. He said only that it was made by a particular family of medicine people in the Lukachukai Mountains, and that the recipe was very old, and that it was meant for one specific purpose.
It was meant to be scattered in a place where something had taken a person.
It was meant to mark that place. To keep the thing from coming back to the same spot. To make the ground there inhospitable.
He took out a small amount of the substance. And he scattered it on the ground where Bidzil’s footprints stopped.
Then he and the other men gathered up the sheep. They led the horse. And they rode home in silence.

Bidzil was never found. Not a body. Not a bone. Not a scrap of his clothing.
The family held a ceremony for him after a year. They did not speak his name aloud after that. The Diné have a practice of not speaking the names of the dead—especially of those who have died badly or strangely—because the name itself can become a kind of doorway.
Hashké Naaba did not speak Bidzil’s name in front of me. He only called him “my grandson.”
He told me that was the worst day of his life. The day he had to ride home without his grandson.
But he told me that he had felt all that day—walking through that piece of country—that the thing which had taken Bidzil was still there. Still nearby. Watching them.
He said you could feel it the way you feel another person standing behind you in a dark room.
He said the air was wrong. He said that even the sun, low on the horizon, looked like it was hesitating. Like it did not want to set in that place because of what would walk in the dark afterward.

I asked him then the question I had wanted to ask all evening.
What was the thing? What actually was it? What was its nature?
He thought for a long time. He looked at the western sky where the last light was bleeding out behind the mesas. He looked at his hands. They were old hands. Strong hands. Hands that had buried a wife and brothers and a grandson he could not bury because there was nothing to bury.
He said this.
He said that the Diné have a story. That long before there were people in this world, there were other beings. Beings of fire. Beings of water. Beings of wind. They lived in the worlds that came before this one.
There were four worlds, he said, before our world. And in each of those worlds, the beings did terrible things to each other. And the world had to be destroyed and remade.
Some of the beings, he said, did not pass cleanly from one world to the next. Some of them got caught in between.
And some of those beings, he said, found the cracks. The places where one world had not closed properly behind another. And they came through.
He said the Four Corners was one of those places.
He said the desert there was *thin*.
And the thing that walked there was something that had not been able to come all the way through. It was here, but it was also still partly somewhere else. That was why it could appear and disappear. That was why it could look like a man one moment and like nothing at all the next. That was why it could call you with a voice that sounded like your father, or your wife, or your child, or a friend you had not seen in twenty years.
Because it was using something it had taken from someone else.
“It collects,” he said. “It has been collecting for a long time.”
That was why he would not name it. Because if you name a collector in its own country, on its own ground, sometimes it remembers you. And it adds you to the list of things it intends eventually to come for.

I sat with him a while longer after he told me that. We did not say much. The sun finished its setting. The sky turned the color of dried blood, and then the color of bruises, and then dark. The translator had long since gone home. There was just an old man and me and the night coming on across an empty country.
After a long time, Hashké Naaba said very quietly in English, “You should leave before it is full dark.”
He was not joking.
I left. I drove that night all the way back to Gallup. I did not stop. I did not let myself look in the rearview mirror for any longer than I had to.
Twice on that drive—on a long, flat stretch of road where there was nothing for miles in any direction—I thought I saw a thin, tall shape standing on a low rise off to the side of the highway.
The first time, I told myself it was a saguaro. Even though saguaros do not really grow that far north.
The second time, I did not let myself look at all. I kept my eyes on the road. I kept driving. I did not slow down. I did not stop until I saw the lights of the town.
When I finally pulled into the gas station in Gallup, my hands were shaking on the wheel.
The man who came out to fill my tank looked at me. Looked at the direction I had come from. Said, “You been out toward Shiprock?”
I said yes.
He said, “Late to be coming back from there.”
I told him I had been visiting an old man. He nodded slowly. He did not ask who. He just looked at the dark road behind me for a long moment. Then he looked back at me.
“Some folks shouldn’t drive that road after sundown,” he said.
He did not explain what he meant. He filled my tank. I paid him. I drove on.

I went back to see Hashké Naaba one more time, the following spring. 1948.
I had questions I wanted to ask him. I had learned in the months between of three more disappearances in that country. A rancher named Curtis Holloway. A pair of hunters from Wyoming whose names I never got. And a woman—a botanist from the University of Arizona named Dr. Viola Vance—who had gone out to study desert flora and had not come back.
I wanted to ask the old man whether these were connected to what he had told me. Whether the thing was active again. Whether something was changing.
But when I drove out to the trading post south of Shiprock, the trading post was closed. The young man who had translated for us was not there.
I asked at a nearby home—in halting Spanish and English—where I might find Hashké Naaba.
The woman who answered the door looked at me a long moment. She said in English, “He has gone to be with his ancestors.”
I asked when.
She said, “In the winter. In the cold months.”
I asked how.
She did not answer me at first. Then she said, “He went out to walk one evening toward the west. He had told his family he wanted to walk a little before supper. He was eighty-two years old. He had walked that path many times. But that evening, he did not come back.”
I asked if they had searched for him.
She nodded. She said the men of his family had gone out at first light. They had followed his footprints. They had found where he had walked across the soft ground to a particular place—a half mile from the house—a place where the land sloped down into a small wash.
And there, she said, his footprints had stopped.
Just stopped. In the open desert. With nothing in front of him.

I felt the cold come up the back of my neck.
I asked her if she knew what had happened. And she said something to me that I have thought about every day for the rest of my life.
“He had been waiting,” she said. “He had been waiting for a long time. He had told us the year before that he had a debt. That when his grandson was taken, he had thrown a thing on the ground—a substance from his pouch—to keep the thing away. But he said the thing remembered. He said that throwing the substance was not the end of it. He said one day the thing would come for him.”
She paused.
“He went to meet it,” she said, “so that it would not come to the house.”
Then she closed the door.
I stood on her porch for a long time. The wind came up out of the west, the way it does in that country in the late afternoon. Smelling of dust and creosote and something else. Something I could not name then, and that I do not name now. The kind of smell that is not a smell. The kind of presence that is not a presence.
I drove back to Gallup that day. I did not stop. I never went back to that piece of country again.

In the years that followed, I tried to learn more. I tried to collect the stories. I spoke with other Diné elders in other parts of the reservation. Most of them would not speak with me at all about this subject.
Two of them spoke obliquely.
They said the thing in the Four Corners was real. They said it had been there a very long time. They said it was particular about who it took. And that the modern world—the world of paved roads and electric lights and radio waves—had not driven it away the way some people thought it would.
It had only made it more careful. More patient. It had learned to hide better. It had learned to wait.
One old woman in the town of Tuba City, in the autumn of 1953, told me that the thing did not come for everyone. She said most people who walked through that country—especially the tourists, the photographers, the families pulling off the highway to buy a postcard at the marker—were of no interest to it at all.
She said it was looking for a particular thing. A particular kind of person.
She said it did not always take. Sometimes it only watched and let you go, and you would never know how close you had come.
I asked her what kind of person it was looking for.
She said something I have written down and kept in a notebook ever since.
“The kind that hears.”

“Most people walk through the world half asleep,” she said. “They do not hear what is talking to them. The thing in the desert does not bother with them. It is a hunter. It does not waste its time. But there are some people—the ones who have always heard things, who have always felt things, who have always known when a room was wrong, when a road was wrong, when a person across a table was not what they seemed.”
She looked at me then. Looked at me the way you look at someone you are not entirely sure you want to keep talking to.
“Those are the ones it watches,” she said. “Those are the ones it calls. Because those are the ones that, when they sit down at the fire, will give it the most.”
She would not say more.

I think about Bidzil. Twenty-three years old. Going out one evening to bring in his grandfather’s sheep. His footprints stopping in the open sand.

The woman in Tuba City told me something else, just before I left her porch that autumn afternoon. She said the thing does not just take people. It takes their voices. Their faces. Their ways of walking and laughing and saying goodnight.
It wears them, she said. Like clothing. Like masks.
That is why the voice you hear in the desert might sound exactly like someone you love. Because it *is* someone you love. Or it was. Before they sat down.
Before they stopped being themselves and started being part of the collection.

I think about that every time I hear a story about someone who walked off into the desert and was never seen again. Every time I read about a hiker who disappeared from a trailhead with no explanation. Every time I see a missing persons poster in a gas station window in a small town where the desert presses up against the edges of everything.
Not all of those are the work of the thing in the Four Corners. Most of them are ordinary tragedies. Accidents. Missteps. The cruel math of human mortality.
But some of them are not.
Some of them are the work of something that was old when the first humans crossed the Bering Land Bridge. Something that has been waiting and watching and collecting for longer than we have had words to describe it.
And it is still out there.
In the thin places. In the cracks between worlds. In the silence that comes up out of the ground at sundown in a certain stretch of desert where four states touch.

But sometimes, on long drives through other empty places—through the high desert of Oregon, through the badlands of South Dakota, through the long straight roads of west Texas where the horizon is just a rumor—I feel it.
That prickling at the back of the neck.
That sense that something is standing just outside my peripheral vision.
That sudden, inexplicable urge to be home. To be inside. To be anywhere but where I am.
And I remember what Hashké Naaba told me.

The woman in Tuba City told me that the substance in Hashké Naaba’s pouch—the one he scattered on the ground where his grandson’s footprints stopped—was not just for marking territory. It was also, she said, a kind of apology.
“You scatter it,” she said, “to tell the thing: *This one is yours now. We will not try to take them back. But this place is no longer yours. You do not get to come here again.*”
It is a negotiation, she said. A treaty between the Diné and the thing. A way of drawing lines that the thing, in its ancient way, respects.
But only if you have the right substance. Only if you have the right songs. Only if you have been trained by a family of medicine people who have passed down the knowledge for five generations.
For everyone else, there is no protection.
For everyone else, there is only the advice Hashké Naaba gave me as the sun went down over the desert that evening in 1947.

I have thought about writing this story down for a long time. I have hesitated because I know that some things, when written, become more real. More fixed. More likely to be found by the wrong eyes, read by the wrong voice, spoken aloud in the wrong place.
But I am old now. Older than Hashké Naaba was when I met him. And I have come to believe that the truth—even dangerous truth—deserves to be told.
So here it is.
The Four Corners is not just a tourist attraction.
The desert there is thin.
And something walks there that has been walking since before the first fire was lit on this continent.
It is hungry.
It is patient.
And it is listening.
